THE LAST SAMURAI stars Tom Cruise as Nathan Algren, a disillusioned Civil War veteran haunted by his role in Native American massacres. In 1876, Algren, now an alcoholic mercenary, is hired by Japanese businessman Omura to train the Imperial Army in Western warfare to crush a samurai rebellion led by Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe). The samurai resist Japan’s rapid modernization under Emperor Meiji, clinging to Bushido traditions. During a premature battle, Algren’s ill-prepared troops are defeated, and he’s captured by Katsumoto. Spared to learn his enemy’s ways, Algren is immersed in a samurai village, where he’s housed with Taka (Koyuki), the widow of a samurai he killed.

Over a winter, Algren learns Bushido principles—honor, discipline, and simplicity—finding peace and purpose. His respect for Katsumoto grows through philosophical exchanges, and he begins mastering samurai combat, guided by Ujio (Hiroyuki Sanada). As Algren embraces the samurai code, he joins their rebellion against Omura’s forces, culminating in a climactic battle in 1877, echoing the Satsuma Rebellion. The samurai, wielding swords against modern weaponry, face tragic defeat, but Algren’s courage influences the Emperor to honor their legacy.

THE LAST SAMURAI was released on January 21, 2003.
