TRISTAN & ISOLDE is a romantic tragedy set in the Dark Ages, reimagining the medieval legend. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Britain is divided among warring tribes, vulnerable to Irish domination. Tristan (James Franco), a young Cornish warrior, is raised by Lord Marke (Rufus Sewell) after his parents’ death. During a battle against Irish forces led by King Donnchadh (David O’Hara), Tristan is wounded and believed dead. Set adrift on a funeral boat, he washes ashore in Ireland, where Isolde (Sophia Myles), the king’s daughter, secretly nurses him back to health. Unaware of each other’s identities, they fall deeply in love.
Tristan returns to Cornwall, and Marke seeks to unite Britain’s tribes against Ireland. Donnchadh offers Isolde’s hand in a tournament to feign peace, but Tristan wins her for Marke, unaware she is his beloved. Bound by duty, Isolde marries Marke, but her passion for Tristan reignites, leading to a clandestine affair. Their secret unravels when Donnchadh’s treachery exploits their love to sow discord, threatening Marke’s alliance and Tristan’s loyalty. Torn between honor and desire, Tristan faces betrayal, while Isolde grapples with her role in a political marriage. The lovers’ choices spark tragic consequences, culminating in sacrifice and heartbreak as war looms.
