SOLOMON AND SHEBA is a biblical epic starring Yul Brynner as Solomon, the wise king of Israel, and Gina Lollobrigida as the seductive Queen of Sheba. Set after the death of King David, the film explores the power struggles and spiritual challenges faced by Solomon as he ascends to the throne. His older brother Adonijah (George Sanders) schemes to seize power, believing himself the rightful heir, while external enemies, including Egypt and the scheming Sheba, threaten Israel’s stability.
The Queen of Sheba, sent by her allies to undermine Solomon, arrives in Jerusalem with a lavish entourage, aiming to seduce him and weaken his kingdom. Solomon, renowned for his wisdom, is initially wary but succumbs to her charm, leading to a passionate yet dangerous romance. Their relationship sparks tension, as Solomon’s devotion to God wavers under Sheba’s pagan influence, causing divine disapproval and internal strife. Adonijah exploits this, plotting with Sheba and foreign powers to overthrow Solomon.
As tensions escalate, Solomon faces a crisis of faith and leadership. Sheba, moved by Solomon’s wisdom and sincerity, begins to question her mission, developing genuine feelings for him. The film builds to a climactic battle where Solomon, reaffirming his faith, leads Israel against his enemies. Sheba, torn between love and loyalty, ultimately converts to Solomon’s God, cementing their bond.
SOLOMON AND SHEBA was released on December 25, 1959.
