A Brief on the Movie
Pocahontas (Irene Bedard) is the daughter of Algonquin chief Powhatan (Russell Means),
who promises her in marriage to Kocoum, a brave whom she doesn't love. Pocahontas would
rather be paddling in her canoe or wandering in the forest, communing with nature and her
animal pals, Meeko, a raccoon, and the hummingbird Flit.
When European settlers arrive,
she becomes enamored of handsome John Smith (Mel Gibson). Their attraction is encouraged
by Grandmother Willow (Linda Hunt), a talking tree.
The situation between their peoples is tense, however, as the settlers, led by Governor
Ratcliffe (David Ogden Stiers) desperately want the gold that they're sure the natives are
concealing. When a dutiful sentry, Thomas (Christian Bale) follows Smith into the woods on
one of his secret meetings with Pocahontas, a tragic mistake leads both groups to the brink
of war. Only the love of Pocahontas and Smith can prevent bloodshed.
Pocahontas received mixed reactions from reviewers, who praised its animation, musical
score, themes, voice performances, characters and songs but criticized its story with its
lack of focus on its tone. The film's historical inaccuracies and racial overtones received
polarized responses. Despite the mixed reviews, Pocahontas was a commercial success earning
$346 million at the box office. The film received two Academy Awards for Best Musical or
Comedy Score and Best Original Song for "Colors of the Wind".
Synopsis
In 1607, the Susan Constant travels from London to the New World, carrying English settlers
from the Virginia Company. The settlers, including Captain John Smith, talk of adventure,
finding gold, fighting "Injuns" and potentially settling in the new land.
In the Powhatan tribe in Werowocomoco, Tsenacommacah, Virginia, Pocahontas, the daughter of
Chief Powhatan, fears being possibly wed to Kocoum, a warrior whom she sees as too serious for
her own free-spirited personality. After having a dream about a spinning arrow, Pocahontas
visits Grandmother Willow, a spiritual talking willow tree that alerts her to the arriving English.
The voyage's leader Governor Ratcliffe, who only seeks wealth and status, has Jamestown built
in a wooded clearing and immediately has the crewmen dig for gold. John departs to explore the
wilderness and encounters Pocahontas. At first, she hides her ability to speak English, but
Grandmother Willow lets her know there is nothing to be afraid of. They quickly bond, fascinated
by each other's worlds, and end up falling in love.
